Connection to paypal failed When your server receives a notification it needs first to confirm whether this notification comes from your payment gateway or not because it is always possible that a valid IP address has been injected and that someone else is tried to validate an order. So there is a mechanism in place to contact a paypal server HikaShop knows as being an official paypal server to confirm that it comes from paypal. If this connection fails, that means that either your hosting company is blocking outgoing connections from your server or you don't have the openssl option activated in your PHP configuration or that the paypal servers are down, the later being a lot less likely. So you should check that you website is able to make outgoing connections and that the SSL is activated. Also, we advise you to contact your hosting provider to ask them about their policies on outgoing connections. If they are not blocking them, then you might want to contact us via our forum as we might need to adapt our plugin to a change from paypal. When I asked my host (Siteground) the said they were unable to locate any server-related reason for it.

Is it because I am using Paypal's sandbox and the emails are fake? I am not receiving emails in the Notifications section in the Sandbox either. Any suggestions? Hi Ellen, It's unlikely due to using Paypal's sandbox or the emails being fake. Based on your host's reply, my guess is that Paypal's server was temporarily down and so you got the connection issue.

I would give it another try. If it still doesn't work, try temporarily taking Paypal out of sandbox and testing one transaction. Also, be sure you're on the latest version of Hikashop and its Paypal plugin as an IP might have been updated. Let us know what result you get.

When I looked further into this it was down to DMARC. The site was using php mail and a rocketmail address so as the mail had not actually come from Rocket Mail's servers it was being rejected by Paypal before the process really started. So what I did was to setup a site address using smtp. So the email came from the site's email server and then it worked. The reply to address was kept as the Rocketmail one.

Now I did not have to set up DMARC, but it was enough to solve the issue. When we migrated the site however I did setup DMARC for the organisations mail and checked that it was working. You will see a lot more of these as besides Paypal being one of the people behind DMARC so are many of the email hosting companies, and other financial institutes.

Also, as we found out, if you have hosting and the route used is shared by many if one of those get blacklisted on one of the routes IP addresses it will also get your mail rejected as blacklisted due to the route it took. And before anyone asks why it is done it is an anti-spam procedure. It increases the security to try to ensure that mail comes from the person that it purports to. Incidentally I have several email accounts on my computer with different domain names. In the past I could send all mail from different domains out the mail via my own personal email mail smtp server.

However if I do that these days it is likely to be rejected by receiving servers for domains other than my own personal one. However I look at this as being a good thing, and also tightens up security especially when you use encryption between the various servers.
